While recycling is probably one of the easiest ways to lead a greener life, it can be a bit inconvenient for some people. Sorting often has to take place at home, and homeowners must then personally drive their recyclables out to the center to be processed. All of this can make recycling seem more and more like a time sink, one that easily gets lost in the shuffle of day-to-day obligations.
But Rochester Hills residents are fortunate. Republic Services, the local municipal waste disposal service, not only takes care of curbside trash removal, but they also see to curbside recycling, making the process a lot more convenient for families trying to juggle lots of busy schedules. Yet the advantages don’t stop there; in an effort to encourage more people to be green, Republic Services and the City of Rochester are participating in the RecycleBank program, which rewards active recyclers.
According to an Examiner.com article by Richard Weaver, household recycling bins are weighed during pickup each week, and points are awarded to households based upon this weight. The points can then be exchanged for free stuff, both online and via participating local businesses, with McDonald’s being one of the latter. Not in the mood for fast food? The RecycleBank website offers a tremendous variety of other rewards that can be exchanged for points online, including discounts and coupons that can be used at various online vendors.
In a day and age when living green is becoming less a question of ethical concerns and more a matter of necessity, it’s encouraging to see involved, energetic communities like Rochester Hills coming together to use innovative means to encourage greener lifestyles. It shows a long-term commitment to the community, and the generations to come.
