If you’ve somehow avoided downtown Rochester Hills for the last eighteen days, then not only are you missing out on all of the great gift-shopping—you’re also missing out on a holiday light display that could give the night sky itself a run for its money! Rochester Hills’ “Big, Bright Light Show” is one of the largest light displays in the Midwest, with over 1.5 million LED lights spreading bright, holiday cheer across the downtown area. Stretching from South Bridge to Romeo Road, and Fourth from Walnut to Water Street, the shops and streets are aglow with a bit of festive spirit that’ll turn even the grumpiest Grinch into a jolly Fezziwig.

The show, which is funded by donations from local businesses and contributions from caring Rochester Hills community members, went up on November 28, and will stay up until the first day of 2012. In this, its sixth annual showing, the lights have expanded onto Fourth Street, and, for the first time, will feature the “Snowflake Spectacular:” 75 snowflakes that dance along with holiday music.

So far, the show has been a big hit among holiday shoppers and passer-bys.  In her article on Patch.com, writer Kristen Bull posted about some of the Twitter chatter surrounding the light show. “Rochester put me in the Christmas mood,” said one Twitter-user. “My favorite part about Michigan this time of year… [are] the lights in Downtown Rochester,” said another.

But probably the sweetest comment Bull reported was, “Took the little man to see the Rochester lights earlier tonight. He loved all the colors.” This, perhaps more than anything, is what the Big Bright Light Show represents: building meaningful holiday memories with your loved ones, and starting traditions that should last years to come. It’s not just about shopping, or finding that perfect Christmas tree or roast recipe; it’s about sharing the season with those you love.
