Community Offerings–Book Discussions at the Troy Public Library

In my previous post, I spoke of the amenities and activities that are available and provided by the Rochester Hills Public Library. This week, I discovered one of the many benefits offered at the Troy Public Library—in-house book discussion groups. There are five types of book clubs held each month and all are free and open to the public.

The first is “Booked for Lunch.” This book club meets the first Wednesday of every month from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. The first meeting was held on October 5th and the meetings will be running through the end of May. They suggest packing your own lunch and coming prepared to discuss the book of the month with your peers. Coffee and tea will be provided. However, the library limits the size of the discussion group to 40 community members.

Next is “Dan Ewald’s Book Discussion Group.” The club is guided by Dan Ewald himself – a, primarily, Detroit sportswriter. The group meets from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month. This size of the group is capped at 20 participants. (On October 11th, the group will be discussing Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.)

“Life Readers” is the third group, which also meets from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month. This club began in September and will run through May. The size of the group will be limited to 20 participants.

“Mystery Book Group” meets in the mornings from 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of every month, also from September to May. Likewise, only 20 individuals will be permitted at each meeting. (On October 11th, the group will be reading The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly.)

Finally, “As a Matter of Fact…Non-Fiction Readers” meets from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Note, this group meets on the third Wednesday of every other month, from September to July. There does not appear to be a set number of participants and community members are encouraged to drop in unannounced. If none of these discussion groups is particularly appealing or if they are at inconvenient times, the Troy Public Library also offers “Books on the Go.” These discussion kits come with 12-15 copies of the same book and various discussion questions, which can be utilized by a discussion group of your choice. You can check it out for eight weeks, with a one-time, eight-week renewal policy. Why not start your own neighborhood book club?
